3 Tips for the Morning of Your Wedding Day

1/31/17

A good chunk of your photography coverage happens before the ceremony. This is often one of the most relaxing and the most fun parts of the day.

During this time, I’ll photograph the bride, bridesmaids and special family members preparing for the day, and these photos are usually some of the bride’s favorites! With that in mind, I’ve made a list of the top 3 things you can do to make your “getting ready” photography the best it can be.

1. Choose a room with a window!

While your photographer should be able to make the best of any lighting situation, choosing to get ready in a room with a window will set your photography up for success and ensure that you get the best photos possible!

While florescent bulbs will cast a yellow or orange light on what it touches, natural light from the sun will give a flattering glow.

This is the MOST important tip I can give about the “getting ready” time (or maybe even the whole wedding day). It’s amazing what can be done with just one window, and I promise you will love the results and see a BIG difference in your photos that are lit with natural light.

2. Have your details ready

When I first arrive, I’ll come by and grab your detail items to photograph.  This is one of my favorite parts of the wedding day, because it allows me to get my creative side ready to go for the rest of the day! These photos set the stage for the whole day and show off the style of your wedding. It saves so much time when a bride already has these items set aside when I arrive.

Here are some of the things I’ll photograph:

the bride’s dress, veil/ hair pieces, all three rings, shoes, the bride’s bouquet, boutonnières, jewelry, invitation suite, perfume, borrowed & blue pieces

There may even be some extra items  to include as you prepare your details. Extras like like ribbon, lace and wood make great additions to these detail photos, and it’s nice to remember the little things that gave your wedding it’s unique style.

3. Keep the room (relatively) clean

You and your bridesmaids will probably bring a lot of stuff to your getting ready room, and that’s ok! It will help me out, though, if you throw away old water bottles, food wrappers, and other trash. This will keep the background of your photos clean.

Plus, keeping this room organized will make you less stressed while you get ready and will save time packing everything up at the end of the night.

If it’s not possible to pick up some things in the room, don’t worry too much about it! I can usually change the angle of a photo to not include the mess.

And 1 extra tip just for you!

On the morning of your wedding, make sure to delegate those final things that need to get done. The bride and the groom shouldn’t be the ones on the phone with the caterer. They shouldn’t be the people decorating every part of the venue. And they shouldn’t be worried about any small emergencies that happen that morning. In fact, it might be better if they don’t even know about those little crises, because in the big picture, those little problems won’t matter. The morning of your wedding should be the time to RELAX, so don’t forget to have fun and prepare yourself (not just your venue) for the day.
